Valid IDP's can only be issued by the same country that issued your domestic license and CANNOT be obtained online while traveling. • FOR Switzerland, Germany, France, Taiwan, Belgium, or Monaco you will need to obtain a Japanese translation of their license from the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF), NOT an International Driving Permit.
Drivers' licenses issued by countries NOT covered by the 1949 Geneva Convention (such as China, Indonesia, Mexico, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, etc.) are not permitted to drive in Japan
Participants must carry their physical International Driving Permit (or for exceptional countries listed above that requires a Japanese translation: the physical domestic license + official translation) and physical passport.
NO Domestic License alone is accepted as a legal document to drive in Japan.
