What you'll see & do

  • The art and the design district.
  • During the Renaissance it was the residence of Milan’s Duke Ludovico Sforza. Leonardo worked there as a military and civil engineer and only later as an artist. He painted the frescoed ceiling of the "Sala delle Asse", combining a naturalist depiction with a strong symbolism.
  • The church of Santa Maria delle Grazie is one of the most beautiful Italian churches and typical of the late Gothic architecture of Milan. It was built by the Dominicans 1463-1482. In the years 1495-1498 Leonardo da Vinci painted the famous mural "The Last Supper" in the refectory of the monks.
  • The hidden and magnificent Church of San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore is a spectacular Renaissance church erected in 1503 on the basis of a project by Giovanni Giacomo Dolcebuono. This church host several frescoes and pictures and thanks to that it has been called the “Sistine Chapel of Milan”.
  • Just behind the Marchesi 1824 pastry shop on Corso Magenta are the ruins of the Roman Imperial Palace in Milan where Emperor Maximian resided in 286 A.D.
  • In the heart of the "milanese Wall Srreet", the beautiful palace of the Banca d'Italia was built in 1907 on design by architect Luigi Broggi (1861-1926) and Cesare Nava (1861-1933) inspired by the architecture of the Vittoriano in Rome.
  • The Pinacoteca with an exhibition of drawings from the Codex Atlanticus, the biggest collection of Leonardo's drawings.
  • The "affordable" shopping street.
  • Milan's first hospital, founded in 1456 by Francesco Sforza and currently the main site of the State University.
  • (Seen from via Larga) With its 515 ft (157 meters) long and 302 ft (92 m) wide, the Duomo di Milano is one of the largest Catholic churches in the world. The site where the Cathedral is currently situated was previously occupied by the Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio. In 838 the Basilica di Santa Tecla was founded next to the first church, but in 1075 a fire devastated both buildings and a few centuries later, the Duomo was established in the same location. The construction of Milan Cathedral began in 1386.
